Combinatorial Approach

Combining unrelated concepts is a powerful approach to generate innovative and unique ideas.

Philosophy recognizes that the boundaries between disciplines, ideas, and concepts are often artificial and arbitrary.

By merging ideas or concepts from different domains, you transcend conventional thinking and create something new and innovative.

You might have heard of the concept of mixing multiple interests together to craft your own unique niche. This is similar, but instead of crafting a niche, you are crafting ideas.

Different domains of knowledge can inform and enrich each other, leading to novel perspectives.

When you combine unrelated concepts, you engage in a process similar to philosophical syncretism.

Syncretism involves the fusion of diverse beliefs, practices, or ideas into a cohesive whole. By merging concepts from different domains, you transcend disciplinary boundaries and invite new possibilities.

This approach reflects the philosophical notion that reality is complex and multifaceted, and no single perspective can fully capture its entirety.

By combining unrelated concepts, we recognize the richness and interconnectedness of ideas, challenging the notion of strict categorization and embracing the fluidity of thought.

Moreover, the act of combining unrelated concepts encourages creative thinking and encourages us to question established frameworks.

It prompts you to look beyond conventional associations and explore novel connections.

Furthermore, combining unrelated concepts challenges the limitations of linear thinking and explore lateral thinking instead.

Connect disparate thoughts

Look for connections between seemingly unrelated thoughts or ideas. Take two or more layers of thoughts and find common threads or themes between them.

You will be learning more about this in the next lesson.

This process of synthesis can lead to innovative ideas that bridge different domains or concepts.

Engage in interdisciplinary thinking.

The Action

So how do you put all this into practice? Here's how ↓

1. Identify the intention behind your combinatorial exploration.

→ Are you trying to come up with a unique take on an idea you have?

→ Are you trying to improve your creative process?

→ Are you trying to come up with a novel perspective?

→ Are you trying to come up with an idea for a product, content or something totally different?

You need to first understand the why. The intention. This matters the most in the combinatorial approach.

2. Now, try to find ways to combine disparate thoughts, unrelated concepts/topics into one to funnel the improvement of an idea.

This helps in generating unique high-signal ideas, craft your own niche of one and build an authentic brand.

3. Come up with your own unique way of 'distributing' or a system to funnel that idea into your work. This helps to improve the creative outlet (which you will learn more about in the next phase)

4. Last but not least, continue to explore different avenues that you identify with or are interested in, and keep testing new ideas. You never know which one may stick with your audience.
